The original trampoline was designed as a launching pad for a circus act. The performer needed to gain height as part of his act and made a frame that was rectangular in shape and housed a canvas bouncing surface held in place by springs. George Nissen, an American gymnast, took this idea and developed it to become the modern day trampoline as used in sports halls and competitive trampolining. Each spring works at a different rate which increases the potential energy put in by the trampolinist. This is converted into a faster upward motion resulting in height.
